Nishizawa making a pose on rocks

Koichi on the Rock

My stay in Australia from August 13th to 28th, '97 is one of the happiest memories of my life.

During my visit there, I stayed at three homes, and one of my host families was a farming family in Molong, a small farm village.  The couple were both only 35 years old, as young as my children and their spouses. Incidentally, I am 71 years old.

The husband was tall, handsome and sportsman-like, and his wife was good-looking and charming.

They had four children, three boys and one girl. Their eldest son was eleven years old, the next eldest sons were nine and three, and the youngest was a one-year-old girl. They were all very cute and lovely children. Among them I was most impressed by the eldest boy, who looked like "Takano-hana" the handsome Japanese sumo-wrestler.  He took very good care of his sister and brothers.

I stayed at their house for about ten days, and I always felt very comfortable living with them. They were very generous and thoughtful towards me.

It seems that when a member of a Christian family becomes eleven years old, he or she gets a blessing from the priest at church. As the eldest boy of my host family became eleven years old, we went to church for his blessing. I was treated as one of the members of the family at the church. Nobody seemed to feel awkward there.

After the blessing, all the people gathered there had a nice chat over coffee and snacks they had brought with them. The young people were very much interested in me and asked me a lot of questions. They didn't let me out even when my host couple asked to leave. They were such generous, thoughtful, and friendly people.

I remember some politician in some country, maybe Japan, said that you should be sweet and kind to others. I think what he really meant was that you are sweet and kind only to ourselves.

In conclusion, through my experience of a homestay in Australia, I understood that Australian people really enjoy their lives, helping each other but not annoying others. I was able to understand the true meaning of freedom and liberty in life.
