Shadowed crane-shaped plum blossom

The ume is a smallish deciduous tree of the rose family. Crests that depict its blossoms realistically are called ume, while those that portray it in a geometrical pattern are called umebachi ('ume bowl'). Plum blossoms, along with pines and bamboos, became an auspicious symbol because of their resistance to cold weather. They were used as patterns for clothing and other things. Sugawara Michizane loved plum blossoms, so it is said that they were used for religious crests at the Tenmangu Shrines, where Michizane was deified. (From 'Family Crests of Japan' ICG Muse, Inc.2001)
